Built on a foundation of rhyolite volcanic rock, Roccastrada hosts one of the most important Natural Reserves of the Region in the area that extends around the Farma river. The small city was founded somewhere between the 10th – 14th centuries, a period that witnessed inhabitants of the countryside transfer to centers that were more or less fortified. After an initial period under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family and a conquest of the city of Siena, it passed into the hands of the Medici family and became a part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. As in many villages, its walls were encompassed with buildings that were constructed at a later date, but one of the gates has been preserved and can be admired. Roccastrada hosts many festivals and events of an historic and cultural nature as well as those dedicated to fine food and wine. We suggest you check in from time to time to see the schedule and participate!
