Manciano is located only a few kilometres from the crystal clear sea of Argentario, the pure air of Monte Amiata and the Thermal Baths of Saturnia. This little Tuscan village offers breathtaking views of all territories of the Maremma area of Tuscany and for this reason it has been named the “Spy of Maremma”. Although there is much evidence of Etruscan and Roman civilizations throughout the town, it was officially founded during the first half of the Middle Ages. Like many other towns and villages, Manciano was also under the protection of the Aldobrandeschi family, the Republic of Siena and finally a part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Traces of the various eras can be noted while touring Manciano: towards the end of the early Middle Ages the Aldobrandeschi family had the imposing castle built in a strategic position between sea and inland. The town walls, with their six keeps and two gates, were constructed during the Republic of Siena’s occupation. The old town center, the Cassero, was founded thanks to the Aldobrandeschi family and restored in 1439 by Siena. It was expanded in 1935. Points of interest in town include the Cathedral dedicated to Manciano’s patron saint Leonardo. Paintings by Paride Pascucci and Pietro Aldi can be admired inside. The Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, built outside the city walls, should be visited as should the Aldobrandeschi Fortress, now used as Town Hall. We would also like to mention the Pre-historic Museum of the Valle del Fiora that holds finds excavated in the necropolis of Poggio Buco and the Pittigliano area: proof of evolution and changes of this area of Tuscany through the various eras.
