Maremma Toscana
covers the southernmost part of Tuscany and is
characterized by an incomparable variety of landscapes, ancient cultural and
historical realities as well as natural and ecological elements that guarantee
this area as one of Italy’s most fascinating and unique territories, with
something to offer to everyone. Maremma features hills, seashores, mountains
and lakes and its many facets can satisfy the demands of anybody who wishes
to spend an unforgettable holiday.
Maremma Toscana
is not only famous for the beauty of its places to visit. It
is also very much sought after for the quality and wide range of typical
products born in a genuine and unpolluted territory whose flavor can be found
in the quality that has granted these delicacies world fame: wines of the finest
quality are produced here such as the DOC (protected designation of origin)
appellation Sovana Rosso, Morellino di Scansano, Bianco di
Pitigliano and Monteregio di Massa Marittima, IGP (protected
geographical status) olive oils and many other products.
Local gastronomy is of particular interest,
deeply linked with traditional dishes such as acquacotta (a soup of
peasant and shepherd tradition, prepared with bread and vegetables),
panzanella (another delicious dish that is easily prepared with dampened
bread, onions and tomatoes) as well as desserts. Another element of traditional
local cuisine is game such as boar, deer and hare.
While driving through Maremma Toscana,
one can observe how the territory and landscape suddenly change, showing
different colors, features, accents and customs that can be linked to various
historical and cultural backgrounds, ancient dominations and even to the
presence of Etruscan and Roman civilizations whose traces are clearly
visible to this day.
Beginning our imaginary voyage through the
territory of Upper Maremma, the area of the metal-bearing hills is noteworthy.
It is in this area that the tourist can visit the delightful medieval village
of Massa Marittima, filled with buildings and historic monuments of
extraordinary beauty and interest, or the city of Follonica with its beaches and
church whose façade was made completely out of cast iron, recalling the city’s
strong bond with the extraction and elaboration of metals.
Remaining in Upper Maremma, we
approach the town of Castiglione della Pescaia, renowned tourist seashore
destination also known for the beauty of its territory and its monuments such as
the Church of Saint John the Baptist in which the remains of Saint William of
Acquitana are kept. Maremma’s most important and best known city is surely
Grosseto (also a province of the Tuscan Region). The city walls built when
Grosseto was under the protection of the Medici are very well preserved and
should be seen. Not far from Grosseto is Talamone, founded directly on
the sea and today a village of incomparable beauty which has held an important
position over the centuries for its port.
Continuing along our tour dedicated to the
discovery of southern Tuscany, we arrive in Capalbio (a village that
features “The Garden of Tarot” by Niki de Saint Phalle that must be seen),
located in the heart of the countryside and only a handful of kilometers from a
splendid, internationally renowned seashore as are the towns of Porto Ercole
and Porto Santo Stefano that rise from the Argentario coast
and are characterized by the presence of fortresses built during the rule of the
State of Presidi. Lastly, another popular destination is Saturnia once
populated by the Etruscans and today famous for its sulfur water and thermal
baths.
